Jumeirah Beach Hotel

A giant wave made of glass juts out into the city from the sea shore… that’s the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. The trees in the driveway leading up to the entrance of the #JumeirahBeachHotel look like they are waving their hands in the air… And you’ll have so much fun at this hotspot – whether partying at Mahiki or on a slide at Wild Wadi Waterpark – that you’ll be doing the same.

Jamie’s Italian and Mahiki sit side by side between the trees

The Welcome

Scented cool towels, smiling people at the entrance waving their hands towards reception, then you enter the lobby and your eyes are drawn upwards. It’s a triangular matrix of colourful, jutting balconies, similar to that found in neighbour #BurjAlArab. This hotel has a quirky, colourful design that has an element of surprise around every corner. Just don’t stand for too long looking up because you’ll start to feel lightheaded or get run over by tourists 🙂

Sweet Suite

Front row seats to the beach? Yes, please. The majority of rooms have airy views of the sea and, if you crane your neck a little, of the grand #BurjAlArab. The rooms are tastefully done in beige and creme colours to keep the attention on the the bright blue water.

This hotel is a little foodie heaven. Our vote goes to Veranda, a casual Italian spot with yummy pizza and tables on the sand where you don’t need to make reservations. It’s an ideal spot for lunchtime with family or a romantic tete-a-tete in the evening. The sound of crashing waves and the feel of sand in your toes transports you to another world.

Beach hair, don’t care! All eyes are on the view of the Burj Al Arab at Veranda…

The recently opened Beach Lounge is an upscale eatery that mixes celebrity chefs with a breezy vibe.

The spa at Jumeirah Beach Hotel is not as razzle dazzle as some of the other Jumeirah properties. If you see the pics of Jumeirah Zabeel Saray’s dramatic, starry-ceiling, Ottoman-inspired Talise Spa, you’ll understand what we’re talking about. They do, however, have talented therapists who will work your knots like a 9 to 5.

Work It Out

Special mention goes to the gorgeous fitness facilities at this hotel. We’re talking Olympic-size swimming pools for laps, tennis courts and a 6m rock climbing wall. Great way to work off the calories from decadent meals (you’ll finish the bread basket every time). Plus, great chance to show off dem pins in a tennis skirt.

It’s like running with a carrot dangling on a stick in front of you… except the carrot is the Burj Al Arab…

Just For Kids

There’s a kids club and Wild Wadi Waterpark to entertain the kiddies while you sip daintily on a drink with an umbrella. You may even fall asleep with the straw in your mouth and no one pulling your hair to wake you up for once. Isn’t that the definition of a holiday?

Sundowners at 360 are an HiH must. The 360 degree view, mellow house music and salty air truly please all the senses. Kick off your shoes and dance next to the DJ, or laze around on one of the couches at the other end smoking a shisha. Party your way.

360 looks like a UFO… Welcome to the Mothership… You really will feel like you’re transported to another planet

Uptown Lounge is a hidden gem at this hotel, with views of the sea to the left, #BurjKhalifa piercing the sky to the right, and the pretty people leaning on the rails hoping for the perfect selfie everywhere. This is a great date night spot.

If you’re looking to really get down, then #Mahiki is the name of the game. Bottles, models, and a funky Polynesian theme (everybody say Tiki!) that encourages you to get silly.

So…Kids Club or Party Central?

Seriously, both. The kids will have a blast running around the beach and hitting up Wild Wadi Waterpark. This means they will be tired enough to sleep soundly at night so you can enjoy a fun night out. You can do a (classy) version of a pub crawl: start with sundowners at 360, go for dinner at Jamie’s Italian paired with Tuscan wine, then follow up with a nightcap at Uptown Lounge. End at #Mahiki for the ones still (barely) standing!

Here are suggestions for #WhatToPack to make the most out of your stay!

Guest Post by Rupert Wright of Ashbright
Paris holds no terrors for well-heeled travellers, who can check into one of the city’s eleven palaces such as the Georges V, Plaza Athénée, Le Bristol or my favourite, Le Meurice. But for those on any kind of budget, finding a decent place to stay in the French capital can be a challenge. Bedrooms smaller than a bathroom, bathrooms smaller than a bidet, we’ve all stayed at one of them and lived to regret it. So, it’s with great pleasure that I have found almost the perfect Parisian hotel – and you don’t need to be a tech billionaire to afford it. The Bedford has been family owned and run for more than a hundred years, combining Swiss roots, French flair and English tradition. It benefits from strong leadership, attention to detail, and a staff eager to look after you. With just 140 rooms, it is large enough to intimate, but not so large that you are anonymous. It’s a 4 star, but deserves more.
The rooms
Parquet flooring; high ceilings; comfortable beds and pillows; keys rather than plastic cards; and best of all, real switches, that turn the lights on and off. The Bedford has sensibly ignored many of the technical traps that can make staying in a hotel room more challenging than setting up your own satellite transmission site. The result is a place that combines understated elegance with modern touches and old school service. Some rooms overlook the rue de l’Arcade, others look over a courtyard, but all are a decent size and a muted colour. There is air-conditioning too, which is a relief when the summer strikes.
Breakfast is a buffet in a glorious belle époque room, boasting stucco reliefs and a glass roof. Dinner happens here too, French cuisine and fairly formal. There’s also a relaxed bistro/bar that serves meals and cocktails.
A stone’s throw from the Place de la Madeleine, the Place de la Concorde and the Tuileries Gardens, and the Opera, this is one of the best areas to stay in Paris. (Marcel Proust used to live just around the corner). It is a lively area, with great boutiques, wine bars and an eclectic mix of restaurants, Japanese, Italian, Chinese, Korean, Lebanese and French too.
Don’t miss
The Bedford knows that many people like to travel with their pets, so they are allowed to stay too.

Welcome to a magazine editor’s guide to luxury hotels and what to wear when you’re there! My work has appeared in: The International New York Times, Rolling Stone, Variety and CNN Travel. I’ve held editorial roles at VIVA Magazine, Dubai Magazine and Stylist Arabia.  Now, I freelance for the likes of Google, CNN and Savoir Flair!

Editing travel pages was always my favourite part of working for lifestyle magazines. I started this blog out of a love of beautiful hotels that provide the fairytale escape of a day as a princess where breakfast is a buffet and chocolates appear on my pillow.
