In Poros, a very green island just 20 minutes by boat from Athens, New Aegli hotel is a laid-back slice of heaven. The natural beauty of this island makes this simple, four star hotel an ideal spot for a great vacation. It’s like a hotel out of the seventies, but really all you need to have a blast is a terrace, a beach steps away from your room, and an iced frappe coffee to enjoy come afternoon.
There’s a 180 degree view of sea and green mountains from the main terrace in the hotel. It’s a beautiful spot for breakfast and for dinner. I had one of the best dinners of my life here: sardines fresh from the sea, fat fried potatoes Greek-style, and ‘mastika’ ice cream. Next to us, a table of about 10 Greek locals who all looked above the age of 90 were laughing, playing cards, and eating ice cream. This must be the place where people go to live forever young.
Super simple, the rooms were plain white and equipped with a TV and decent shower. Ask for a corner room, which has the same sweeping 180 degree views as the restaurant terrace below.
Best thing to do is spend the day at the beach or pool. You’ll be pretty happy either way.
Poros is a relaxed island. We had fun exploring the island (especially Love Bay!) and popping into island bars – the kind where everyone is in summery dresses and flip flops. Some nights, we just lingered long after dinner – the bartender turned out to be an exceptional pianist who rocked everything from Chopin nocturnes to Latin jazz. There’s something intoxicating about beautiful music coupled with the sea breeze and moonlight. All that’s missing is writing in the sky spelling out the obvious: “This is super romantic!”
Channel the charm of the Aegean with this white-and-blue, breezy ensemble.
